User has to upload image separately in a library, then copy the URL then paste it back in the Slider list. Here’s the analysis of the scores and how they came about:īPopulating form is pretty straight forward. Displaying the article for each announcement. Here’s my analysis which I’m basing on the following areas: Solution 3 – PortalFront SharePoint News Slider (commercial option – full disclosure we develop) Solution 2 – Anything slider based on jQuery found on internet Solution 1 – Out of the box announcements web part The research came down to a few options which we will explore: What are some solutions that can get us there? I will detail the ideal solution for news publishing that I envision and will explore the solutions available to get us there. My argument the out of the box announcement web part is too poor for if you’re looking to make a proper investment in SharePoint. That’s when I get off my seat, raise my objections and disappoint everyone that there is a bit more to it. The quick answer is ‘no problem! SharePoint has an announcement web part, done! Let’s slap that on there and we’re done’. One of the biggest requests many companies ask for is having a SharePoint slider on the homepage. The importance of a good landing page for SharePoint is something that I stressed many times before and should reflect the company culture and exhibit some modern elements. An employee that lands on a landing page that looks like it was built since WorldWideWeb (yes not space), which is a browser that came before Netscape, will turn the intranet into a laughing stock. An intranet should be treated with respect for it to be respected. We know that a public web site that looks dated can turn away customers or at least raise doubt about the company behind it. The importance of a good presentation is something that in my opinion is crucial to encourage adoption and gaining respect and does not have to be a big investment. This is frankly a disappointment to me because they have made progress in other areas that are quiet exceptional. Specifically I am frustrated at the lack of SharePoint sliders. My observation is that SharePoint and Microsoft for that matter failed at coming up with a solid news webpart or sliders for SharePoint that is fully featured and sexy looking that displays news, blogs, and content in an attractive, modern age, web 2.0 style that reflects a mature Microsoft product. In this article, I want to address a frustration and observation that I have notice about SharePoint overall in the past 10 years of experience with it.
